Verena Burger was born on April 2, 1967, in Bamberg, Germany. From an early age, she spent every spare moment at the local riding school in Bamberg, where her passion for horses began. In 1987, she started her apprenticeship with Jan Nivelles in the Rhineland, earning her Bereiter FN certification in 1990. She continued to work with Jan Nivelles as a rider for two more years before moving to Belgium in 1992.
In Belgium, Verena co-founded a dressage breeding stable with Yves Gielen. Over the years, she has achieved numerous successes in the sport, training young horses all the way to the Grand Prix level. Their stable is primarily focused on breeding and sales, with several horses bred by them excelling internationally. Notable horses include Femke, now competing at Grand Prix level with Sascha Schultz, Ringo Star, who placed second at the European Young Riders Championship with Lisanne Zoutendijk, and Rebroff, who achieved third place at the 2019 Louisdor Preis in Frankfurt with Insa Hansen. Another standout is Maxifun, who became the Dutch ZZ-Licht champion with Lars op't Hoog, scoring around 70% at Prix St. Georges level.
Verena's dedication to breeding and training top-level dressage horses has established her as a respected figure in the equestrian community, with many of her horses making a significant impact on the international stage.
Yves Gielen was born in Hasselt in 1975, and from a young age, his life revolved around horses. As a child, he spent every Sunday of the season at dressage or jumping competitions. Between 1990 and 1993, Yves competed as a young rider, and in 1992, he began training with Jan Nivelles, where he also met Verena. In 1993, they decided to join forces and start a dressage breeding stable together.
While Yves has competed at the Inter I level, his primary focus is on breeding, coaching riders, and training young horses. He is deeply involved in the day-to-day management of the stable, ensuring that both the horses and the riders reach their full potential. With a passion for teaching, Yves spends much of his time coaching riders, helping them refine their skills and achieve success in the sport.
